The italian Long Term Ecological Research Network (LTER Italy) was officially admitted in the International LTER Network (ILTER).
during the general meeting held in Namibia in 2006.
Today the International LTER Network includes 39 member countries; among them you can find U.S.A., Brasil, China, United Kingdom and Australia.
The Italian initiative was supported by National Forest Service since 2004, together with National Council for Research, National Institute for Environmental Protection and Research, the Italian Society of Ecology, the Italian Society of Botany, the Italian Society for Selviculture and Forest Ecology, the Italian Society of Marine Biology and the Italian Association for Oceanography and Limnology.
LTER Italy is made of 20 sites; 9 research stations in 5 terrestrial sites are CON.ECO.FOR. permanent plots under National Forest Service coordination. Lakes from the subalpine belt, marine research stations in Northern Adriatic Sea managed by the National Council for Research and in the Gulf of Naples managed by the A.Dohrn Zoological Station are also included in the Italian Network together with many other sites and research stations in terrestrial, transitional, marine and freshwater ecosystems. CON.ECO.FOR. Service also runs LTER Italy Secretariat.
LTER Italy will help to understand the status of the main terrestrial, acquatic and marine ecosystems in relation to the effects of pollution, climate change and biodiversity loss.
